So, for those of you who don't know.
I recently retired from my 16 year run in trades.
Not necessarily because I wanted to, well maybe a bit because I wanted to , but mostly because my body was telling me I HAD to.
I had been dealing with chronic neck pain from welding for longer than I can remember. Combined with the back pain I have had since I was 10 and it was almost unbearable some days. Still, that wasn't the main reason why I got out.
I got out because I was experiencing extreme lethargy. To the point where I couldn't focus. I couldn't remember things I should remember. I built cars for 4 years and I couldn't remember the name of parts I was just working on. I couldn't remember basic things. I could only walk my dog for 15 minutes before I would start feeling exhausted. I would come home for lunch and I would make excuses not to go back to work because I could barely keep my eyes open.
It was real. Whatever IT was. It was taking over my life.
Here are some reasons why you are feeling so damn exhausted
1) Thyroid Problems
So for those of you who don't know. The thyroid is responsible for regulating your heart rate, body temperature and metabolism. If your thyroid is under active it will cause weight gain and make you feel sluggish. If it is over active it will make you feel the opposite.
2)Iron Deficiency- Anemia
We DO NOT get enough iron from our diets alone. Did you know that women lose from 5-180ml of blood per cycle. On average we are losing about 3-24 mg of iron per cycle. The recommended amount of Iron a woman over the age of 18 requires is 18mgs PER DAY. If we do not replace the iron that we are losing we risk neurocognitive disorders, decreased immune function, and complications in pregnancy. If you have daughters and they are bleeding, they need to be on and iron supplement. PERIOD. This is information we should have received in school. This is information that people SHOULD have been telling us the DAY we got our periods. Thus here I am. Being the advocate for knowledge so that people don't get to a point that I did where my thyroid and anemia kept me from living a happy healthy life.
I don't know about you, but I never get enough water. I tell myself how much I hate water so that probably doesn't help anything. I force myself to drink fluids every day. I don't like it, but I know how important it is to keep your body hydrated, ESPECIALLY working trades. When winter comes along we need more hydration to make up for the regulation of our body temperatures in colder weather. It feels weird drinking cold water when you are working out in the cold.....
Getting the proper nutrients your body needs is imperative to not only your immune system but your day to day cognitive functions. If you aren't getting enough nutrients your body will start pulling from reserves that need those nutrients for other important things like brain function and metabolism regulation.
Whatever you do, don't leave your symptoms until it is too late.
Some very serious underlying causes of exhaustion and lethargy are diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Its time to focus on your self care and make your health a priority. YOU ARE WORTH IT!
